UVC Disinfection of Air, Surfaces and Items
Ultraviolet (UV) treatment is a fast and cost-effective way to disinfect air and surface from harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, mould spores, algae and yeast.
Becoming more and more recognised as having an important role in protection strategies, UVC is widely used for infection prevention control and surface & air disinfection for airborne pathogens and toxic chemicals.
UVC light provides advantages over liquid disinfectants that include, performing disinfection automatically, remotely, quickly and efficiently.
UV light is a natural process and does not produce harmful chemicals in the process of air and surface disinfection. It’s an effective and environmentally friendly disinfection method that inactivates bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Bacteria and viruses have known, but limited repair mechanisms that are easily overwhelmed. Exposure to UV photons (light) prevents cell replication and inactivates bacteria and viruses. Bacteria and viruses, crucially, can develop resistance to antibiotics and chemicals but have not been shown to develop any resistance to UV.

Inprecon Range of UVC Disinfection of Air, Surface and Items
UVC lights are strategically placed in rooms to disinfect air by exposing it to UVC light as it circulates upward and reduces the concentration of airborne pathogens.
Floor-standing UVC Devices
UVC lights are contained within a standalone tower unit mounted on wheels for ease of use. The tower units are portable and can be positioned at the desired location in a room, when not being used. They provide local air disinfection within a contained area and utilise a standard electrical socket. Whilst safety and device operation training is necessary no technical installation is required.
Single or multiple UVC linear lights fixed to a ceiling, wall or above a door frame. The lights provide local air disinfection within a contained area and utilise a standard electrical socket. Whilst safety and device operation training is necessary there is no technical installation required.
Disinfection cabinets are ideal for the disinfection of small items that are used by healthcare professionals, for personal hygiene/grooming or shared items that are frequently touched, such as keyboards, phones and packaging. Disinfecting these items helps to prevent the spread of harmful pathogens, viruses and reduces the risk of cross contamination.
Clear health & safety guidance is essential when using UV Light Technology lights including our recommendations to install motion sensor PIRs, vigilance control, fail-safe and signage.
Inprecon Applications for Infection Prevention and Control
Healthcare: UVC light is used in UK healthcare settings for air and surface disinfection and is effective in reducing healthcare-acquired infections (HCIAs) including MRSA and other resistant bacteria. Not only does UVC disinfection improve patient care by reducing patient treatments it reduces costs and other associated costs such as staff absenteeism. UVC is faster, therefore, reduces terminal disinfection times and is efficient in the disinfection of endoscopes and other medical equipment reducing the risk of cross-contamination.
Education: UVC disinfection is a complementary addition to help manage infection control processes in all levels of education from early years to universities – minimising illness and improve attendance for students and staff.
Commercial/offices: Versatile safe and effective, UVC disinfection reduces infection transmission in commercial settings contributing to a healthier and safer environment for occupants.
Manufacturing plants: UVC disinfection is proven in its effectiveness in manufacturing by reducing microbial contamination without harsh chemicals or heat, impacting product quality and extending shelf life. This method is particularly useful in food processing, electronics manufacturing, and other industries where maintaining cleanliness and hygiene is crucial.
Retail outlets: Faster enhanced hygiene creates a safer environment for customers and employees. Reduces staff sickness and the associated costs. Increases peace of mind, customer confidence and brand value.
Food and beverage production: Being able to give consumers peace of mind that the food they consume meets relevant standards for safety and quality is of paramount importance to trusted brands. Whether you’re a food producer, processor or packaging provider chemical-free UV light improves quality assurance throughout all areas of your production. From reducing contamination of ingredients and packaging entering buildings or moving from low risk to high care, disinfection of food and packaging during production, to general, environmental disinfection of unoccupied rooms and areas.
Transport: UVC disinfection is increasingly used in the UK’s transport industry to help combat the spread of viruses and bacteria, particularly in high-traffic areas like trains, buses, and airports.
Public transport: Some examples of public transport applications include Transport of London (TFL) has implemented UVC disinfection devices on escalators, which are connected to the handrails and use the escalator’s motion to power a UV lamp that continuously disinfects the surfaces. Abellio Bus London has also installed UVC devices in their depots, including active air devices in control rooms and upper air devices in training rooms and reception areas.
