Aerospace

According to KPMG the global Aerospace and Defence sector is growing rapidly. Airbus and Boeing predict more than 40,000 new commercial jets will be manufactured by 2060. Global defence spending is increasing at the fastest rate in over 40 years. In a rapidly growing market and the advent of commercialising space travel focus on quality and safety remains a vitally important factor.

Spacecraft and other aerospace assets are built for harsh conditions and space exploration that can be for just a few days or long-duration missions that can be from months to years such as space probes, satellites and The International Space Station that has been in continuous operation since November 2000.

UV inspection plays a critical part in ensuring the safety of components for aerospace, specialist military craft and vehicles and civil aviation manufacturing, maintenance and repair processes. UV Light Technology manufactures a range of UV equipment, designed for professional non-destructive testing.

The Midas, Midas Mini and Midas Micro blacklights are designed for fluorescent inspection professionals who need UV technology that conforms with RRES 90061, ASTM E3022 and Airbus AITM6-1001 for non-destructive testing. The Olympus Hand, Olympus Flood, Titan, Enigma and Enigma XL products conform with RRES 90061 and Airbus AITM6-1001.

We understand that failures due to what may be regarded as minor defects such as stress cracks, manufacturing defects or metal fatigue can have catastrophic consequences. Effective NDT inspections detect the potential for failures before they happen and enhance the reliability and safety of aerospace assets.

At the manufacturing stage NDT inspection provides assurance of the integrity of raw materials such as metals and composites before they are used to manufacture components. Inspectors will look for surface and internal imperfections that can impact the reliability or safety of the part.

Non-destructive Testing

UV blacklights for use in conjunction with fluorescent dye penetrants and magnetic particles for highlighting defects in metals and ceramics without causing damage to the integrity of the part being tested. NDT inspection processes are designed to detect surface or subsurface flaws such as hairline cracks in aircraft landing gear, automotive steering systems, corrosion and other defects that can occur during manufacturing or the operation lifecycle. NDT testing helps to ensure these and many other safety critical components on which our lives may depend.

Fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) is a method of NDT testing where an application of fluorescent dye penetrant is applied to the surface followed by the application of a developer. Under UV light the dye sharply contrasts with the dark background resulting in a vivid reference to even the minute flaws that become visible to the inspector.
