UV exposure calculations
The following information is only applicable to the UVC Germicidal Hand Lamp, manufactured by UV Light Technology Limited. All UV-C irradiance measurements were taken at 200 mm distance from the lamp.
When comparing to independent research conducted between Signify and Boston University, we can calculate the exposure time required to achieve a particular kill rate of SARS-CoV-2 by dividing the UVC irradiance measurements taken into the UVC dose levels stated in the Press Release from June 16, 2020.
UV-C irradiance values
- Maximum Centre of beam: 50 W/m2
- Average A4 area: 37.5 W/m2
UV-C dose requirements
- UV-C dose required to kill 99% of SARS-CoV-2: 50 J/m2
- UV-C dose required to kill 99.9999% of SARS-CoV-2: 220 J/m2
UV-C exposure times
- The exposure time required to kill 99% of SARS-CoV-2: 1.33 seconds
- The exposure time required to kill 99.9999% of SARS-CoV-2: 5.87 seconds
Excerpt from Press Release, June 16, 2020 (units converted from mJ/cm2 to J/m2)
Since the start of the SARS CoV-2 pandemic, Dr. Anthony Griffiths, Associate Professor of Microbiology at Boston University School of Medicine and his team have been working on developing tools to support scientific advancement in this field.
During their research, they have treated inoculated material with different doses of UVC radiation coming from a Signify light source and assessed the inactivation capacity under various conditions. The team applied a dose of 50 J/m2, resulting in a reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus of 99%. Based on the data, it was determined that a dose of 220 J/m2 will result in a reduction of 99.9999%.
“Our test results show that above a specific dose of UVC radiation, viruses were completely inactivated: in a matter of seconds we could no longer detect any virus,” said Dr. Anthony Griffiths. “We’re very excited about these findings and hope that this will accelerate the development of products that can help limit the spread of COVID-19.”
Protection of skin and eyes
All persons exposed to any UV light from the UVC Germicidal Hand Lamp must always cover all skin, hair and eyes. The areas of skin usually at risk are the hands, forearms, head, face and neck because other areas are usually covered by clothing. The hands must be protected by wearing gloves and arms covered by long sleeves, using a material with low UV light transmission.
In general, darker coloured, heavier fabrics with a closed structure, offer a higher level of protection than light coloured, lightweight fabrics with an open structure. Particular attention must be paid to prevent any gaps in protective clothing that can occur around the ankles, neck and wrist areas. A hood or balaclava must be used to protect the head and neck. The eyes and face must be protected by the UV blocking dark face shield.
